Gastrointestinal Surgery Tips and Tricks

Approved by RACE for 1 CE Hour

Please join us as we discuss indications for abdominal exploratory and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, review basic surgical principles and
practical tips for performing these procedures. We will also briefly go through some 
peri-operative management and common complications
of GI surgery. 

Our goal is for attendees to leave this lecture with a good understanding of the indications, surgical techniques and peri-operative care associated with gastrointestinal surgery. 

Dinner provided at 7:00 PM / Lecture begins at 7:30 PM.


Shiara Arulpragasam, DVM, CCRP, DACVS 
Dr. Arulpragasam (“Dr. A”)  earned her Bachelor of Science at Tufts University in 2007.
She stayed at Tufts University for veterinary school and obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. She then completed a small animal rotating internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Arulpragasam went on to complete a small animal surgery internship at the University of Florida followed by a
three year small animal surgery residency at the University of Tennessee. While at University of Tennessee, Dr. Arulpragasam obtained her certification as a canine rehabilitation practitioner (CCRP). Dr. Arulpragasam’s interests include minimally
invasive surgery, wound management and reconstructive surgery, congenital portosystemic
shunts, cardiothoracic surgery and physical rehabilitation for orthopedic and neurologic conditions. She is trained in both the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) and
Lateral Extracapsular Suture techniques for cranial cruciate ligament injury.

Barri Sarowitz, VMD, DACVS
Dr. Sarowitz obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Cornell University in 2007.
She moved to Philadelphia and worked as a veterinary technician for a year before completing veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. After graduating, Dr. Sarowitz completed a rotating internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in
Tinton Falls, NJ. Following her internship, she completed a three-year residency in
surgery at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in 2016. Dr. Sarowitz's surgical interests include surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and wound management. She is trained in the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and lateral extracapsular suture techniques for cranial cruciate ligament disease.
