Traditional vs. Indie Publishing: What's Best for the Success of Your Book(s)?

Lee Foster

What are the viable paths for the modern author who wants to publish a book? Lee Foster has published in all the possible scenarios, both in “traditional” publishing and in “independent” publishing. Most BAIPA members may want to publish independently, but it’s important to understand also the traditional paths in both “work for hire” and “royalty” companies. A BAIPA author may also have several books in mind, and some might be best done traditionally, some indie. When doing an indie book, Lee also publishes as an ebook, with BookBaby. Lee has done indie books both offset and print on demand, and his latest book is print-on-demand with both CreateSpace and Lightning Source. He’ll discuss why. Lee has published two of his books as apps, and will help BAIPA authors understand whether their books could be an app, which is a special and new form for book content. Finally, Lee has published one “book” as a facsimile website, and will explain the rationale for this, which alters the definition of what is a book. Lee’s goal in his talk is to assist BAIPA authors in evaluating the wisdom of their individual paths towards publication
