Getting Your Hands Dirty:

Using Research in Your Fiction

On Saturday, March 14, author and Red Clay favorite Renea Winchester will host a workshop on using research in your fiction. Renea's latest book, Farming, Friends, and Fried Bologna Sandwiches, is a prime example of how Renea got her hands dirty to research for her novel. Renea will bring her novel in progress to share with readers how she applies her research to her writing.

Workshop topics will include:

  • Why using Wikipedia is big mistake.
  • Why time investing in research is more important than writing what you know.
  • How to use photographs and other visual aides to mine stories.

Renea’s work has been featured in Georgia Backroads, Longleaf Style, as well as other magazines. She is a two-time winner of the Appalachian Heritage Award, and a SIBA and GAYA nominee. She teaches authors how to create believable characters through dialogue and volunteers at her local library. In October 2014, Mercer University Press released her latest book, Farming, Friends and Fried Bologna Sandwiches.
