  • Afterschool program leaders working with students in energy, environment, STEM programming and Pre-Service Teachers.

8:00 a.m.             Registration

Pick up NEED materials and workshop supplies.  Continental breakfast will be served.  NEED curriculum kits are sponsored for each teacher attending the workshop. 

 

8:30 a.m.             Welcome!

Meet your fellow participants and the sponsors of today’s workshop.  Review goals and objectives for the workshop and begin planning ways to use the NEED materials and training in your school.

 

9:00 a.m.             Forms of Energy and Energy Transformations and The Science of Electricity

After a brief refresh on the forms of energy and energy transformations, learn more about the forms of energy while experimenting with the NEED Project’s Science of Electricity activity.  

 

10:30 a.m.           Electric Connections and Energy Round Up

 

11:00 a.m.           Baseload Balance

This activity demonstrates how electricity supply is transmitted on the electric grid to consumers. It explores the differences between baseload and peak demand power, and how power companies maintain supply to ensure customers have power as they need it.

 

11:45 a.m.           Lunch and Learn

·         Learn about National Grid’s Innovation Hub as a location for school trips

·         Understand how energy efficiency can help with costs related to baseload and peak demand

·         Learn about Rhode Island’s national leadership in energy efficiency

·         Why should I care about EE? Why does my utility care about EE?

·         Learn about National Grid Energy Efficiency Programs that are available for schools, and residential homes

12:30 p.m.          Monitoring and Measuring Energy Use at Home and at School

Explore energy use at home and at school.  Learn the science behind energy efficiency and simple ways to reduce energy use and energy cost at home and at school. 

 

2:15 p.m.             Other Resources, Evaluation, Curriculum Orders and Wrap Up   

Complete Workshop Evaluations, Post-workshop assessment, receive substitute reimbursement forms, and complete Order Forms for Curriculum and Kits

 

3:00 p.m.             Adjourn

These lessons and activities help student understand wind and solar powered electricity generation.   Lessons are available at four levels:   primary, elementary, intermediate, and secondary.
