Annual Early Childhood Training Conference
Thursday, March 8, 2018 - Friday, March 9, 2018
Opening Keynote Speaker:
Stacey Bess: Author, Educator, Advocate for Children
Stacey Bess, a leading national advocate for the educational rights of impoverished children, is MHSA's keynoter for the 27th Annual Early Childhood Training Conference. She is an award-winning educator with great insight into the hearts of children in need and believes that the way to most effectively teach children any subject is to treat them with love and kindness. Bess began her teaching career at "The School With No Name" located in the Salt Lake City shelter where she taught math, reading and self-worth to homeless and transient children. While working at The School With No Name, Bess chronicled the heart-wrenching stories of her students so she would never forget how far these children had come. Reviewing the stories, she discovered profound life-lessons and eventually published a book, "Nobody Don't Love Nobody," that was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie in 2011 called "Beyond the Blackboard." Bess has won prestigious local and national awards -- including the esteemed National Jefferson Award, along with honorees First Lady Barbara Bush, Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackman and Ambassador Walter Annenberg. Her story continues to change lives as her audiences are inspired to become more invested in their communities.
Closing Keynote Speaker:
Tommy J. Sheridan, Senior Director, Government Affairs, National Head Start Association
Tommy Sheridan is the Senior Director of Government Affairs for the National Head Start Association (NHSA) in Alexandria, VA, where he has worked since 2009. He is the main liaison between the Head Start community and the powers that be in D.C. In this role, Tommy works with the Head Start community to lobby, advocate, educate and inform Congress, the White House, and the Federal Administration about Head Start and early learning. He plays a significant role in strategizing, developing and implementing the Head Start community's vision for the future of Head Start. Tommy received an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Louis University and a Masters of Public Administration degree from George Washington University.
