RC Consult Group: Implicit Bias and
Cultural Humility 

Paying attention to biases and reducing them will improve expression and understanding of disagreements. Acknowledging the reality and role of implicit biases in guiding behaviors and beliefs can result in actionable and effective solutions to facilitate and improve relationships.

Facilitated discussions on biases and perceptions will create a safe environment for hard ongoing conversations.  Cultural safety is the ability to create a trusting environment that is socially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically safe for staff and family members.  Cultural humility challenges us to learn from others, reserve judgement, and bridge the cultural divide.  Cultural humility increases the quality of interpersonal actions.

This training will build and foster understanding of implicit biases and cultural humility. A framework for positive attitude development and the facilitation of reciprocal open questions will be cultivated.

Michele Stewart-Copes, MS, MSW is CEO of System for Education Equity & Transition (SEET) Consultants, LLC, and a national trainer and organizational consultant specializing in system-of-care, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) policy development, and cultural competency coaching. She holds the National Supervisor Coach Wraparound Certification, a Master of Science degree in Guidance & Counseling and a Master’s degree in Social Work. Michele developed and managed the nation’s first successful wraparound effort within an inner-city area, which was focused on Puerto Rican and African American neighborhoods in Hartford, CT. She has provided wraparound training and coaching in twenty states and Canada.

In addition to training, Michele has worked as a Community Coordinator with the Department of Public Heath’s Office of Minority Health, been an Adjunct Professor at Southern Connecticut State University for the Master of Public Health Program, as well as serving on a variety of commissions and committees focused on topics such as community development, health equity, ethics, and leadership. She is also a member of the Governor’s Council on Women & Girls Steering Committee and was the first African American elected to the New Britain Board of Education.
