RC Webinar: Widening the Window of Tolerance -  Strategies for Individual and Collective Healing

In many ways the world shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As trauma professionals, we can see this asa healthy and adaptive response. But, to effectively manage stress and heal trauma (especially during a global pandemic)we must also open up – by widening our individual and collective windows of tolerance.

This webinar will take a deeper look at the neurobiological window of tolerance (WOT), which represents an individual’soptimal zone of physiological arousal. In short, a wide window supports a normal threat response, executive function, social engagement, regulation and resilience. A narrow window, on the other hand, leads to a malfunctioning threatresponse, disruption of both social engagement and executive function, dysregulation and less resilience.

Together we will explore ways that the WOT can be narrowed, including exposure to adversity, trauma, and stress, We will also explore the surprising ways in which mindfulness practices, physical exercise, and even talk therapy can also narrow our windows. Strategies for widening our windows will be offered, including techniques for modifying treatment environments, promoting self-regulation, and facilitating full recovery from stress activation. We will also examine ways in which our collective window can both be narrowed and widened, with implications for organizations serving trauma survivors.
