RC Train-the-Trainer - July 15-17, 2020 

Training Description

The training covers the skills needed to effectively teach the RC Basic training.  At the training, there will be some time spent on reviewing RC concepts. However, the majority of time will be spent learning HOW to teach RC. Trainers will be expected to practice teach to their peers and the Faculty Trainers in a supportive learning environment.  Particular focus is placed on helping participants exemplify as a trainer the relational concept of RICH (Respect, Information, Connection, and Hope) central to the RC approach. 

Participants will learn and practice a variety of teaching techniques including didactic lecture, small group activities, large group discussions, and role plays.  Because the material in RC challenges the treatment approaches used in many mental health and education settings, the training addresses how to teach and model a paradigm shift as well as field challenging questions and comments.

Preparation for Train-the-Trainer

Before attending the training, participants are expected to have a working knowledge of the basic concepts in Risking Connection. 

Participants need to pass a knowledge test in order to gain entrance to the Train-the-Trainer.  The content for the test is drawn from a study guide we send to you upon registration. Advance preparation IS necessary for people to pass the test. Participants will have two chances to pass.  We will send detailed instructions for taking the test when we receive your registration.

Training Materials

Each RC Associate trainer will receive the Teaching Manual for Risking Connection at the training. Materials to teach the RC Basic Training (PowerPoint slides, videos, etc) are also available at the RC Trainers’ Corner on the TSI website. The Teaching Manual and access to the training materials are built into the training fee.

Training Fees

Training fee includes all training materials; continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily.

Registration Fee:  $770

Registration Fee + Continuinig Education Credits:  $810

Cancellation 

Payment is expected at the time of registration.  We will refund the registration fee minus a $30 processing fee for cancellations two weeks prior to the training.  No refunds will be made for cancellations inside two weeks. 

However, for this training, participants are required to pass the RC Knowledge Test in order to attend.  If a proposed trainer fails the test twice, fees will be refunded minus a $30 processing charge.

Continuing Education Credits

This event is co-sponsored by R. Cassidy Seminars to provide 18.5 CE hours.

Satisfactory Completion. Participants must have paid the continuing education fee, signed in, attended the entire seminar, completed an evaluation, and signed out in order to receive a certificate. Failure to sign in or out will result in forfeiture of credit for the entire course. No exceptions will be made. Partial credit is not available.

Psychologists. R. Cassidy Seminars is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. R. Cassidy Seminars maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Social Workers. R. Cassidy Seminars, ACE Provider #1082 is an approved provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. R. Cassidy Seminars maintains responsibility for this program. Approval Period: April 15, 2015- April 15, 2018. Social workers should contact their regulartory board to determine course approval. Social workers will receive continuing education clinical social work clock hours for participating in this course.

CA The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred the CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licenses. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.

NY R. Cassidy Seminars is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider (#0006) of continuing education for licensed social workers.

Counselors/ Marriage and Family Therapists.

CA The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licenses. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.

Other States If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure. The Ohio Board includes Counselors. 

Chemical Dependancy Counselors. Provider approved by NAADAC Approved Education Provider Program for designated hours. Approval #000654

CA Provider approved by CFAAP/CAADAC, Provider #4N-00-434-0212 for designated CEHs. CAADAC is an ICRC member which has reciprocity with most ICRC member states.

Requirements for Adopting the Risking Connection Trauma Training Program

Organizational/System Requirements 

The Risking Connection approach represents a paradigm shift from the treatment models used in most mental and behavioral health settings.  Risking Connection is consistent with the principles of trauma-informed care and can be used to implement and sustain a trauma-informed system of care within organizations.  Implementing trauma-informed care in human service settings is a challenging process requiring a shift of culture in the wider organization. Isolated Risking Connection training without wider organizational or system buy-in is generally unsuccessful in promoting change in knowledge, beliefs, or organizational practice. For these reasons, we have developed the following organizational requirements:

1. Unless a client agency of the Traumatic Stress Institute prior to 2018, organizations must implement RC training as part of the TSI's Whole-System Change Model to Trauma-Informed Care.
2. The organization/system must agree to conduct RC trainings in the following manner:
   •  RC trainings must be a minimum of 16 hours training time (not including breaks and lunch)
   • RC trainings must be led by at least one RC Associate Trainer with an advanced degree in mental health or human services.
   • RC Associate Trainers must use the training outline in the Teaching Manual for Risking Connection as the basic structure for their trainings.  Within the basic structure, adaptations are permitted.
   • RC Trainings can have no more than 40 participants.
   • RC training must use at least 2 RC Associate Trainers unless there are unusual extenuating circumstances.

3.  Organizations/systems must comply with the credentialing standards for RC Associate Trainers outlined in the section below.

 Credentialing Requirements for Risking Connection Associate Trainers

Training Risking Connection successfully requires RC Associate Trainers to have a foundation of knowledge, clinical experience, an ownership of the approach, and skill as a presenter. Effective dissemination of RC requires that RC Associate Trainers teach RC in a way that maintains fidelity to the model.  Below are the credentialing requirements for RC Associate Trainers.  To be an RC Associate Trainer, the person must: 

• Have completed the RC Basic Training either at the Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI) or at the organization that is already using RC
• Pass a knowledge test prior to attending the Train-the-Trainer.
• Have an advanced degree in the mental health or human services field OR be at an organization/system where half of the RC Associate Trainers have advanced degrees.
• Have a least 3 years experience working with the organization’s client population.
• Attend a recertification training every two years. 
• If in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island, attend two in-person RC Trainer events per year. Recertification training counts as one event during a recert year. There are 4 in-person RC Trainer events offered each year.  See events page on the TSI website for details.
• If outside these states, attend at least 2 RC Trainer webinars per year. Recertification training counts as one of these events during a recert year. There are generally 4 webinars offered each year. See events page of the TSI website for details.
• Submit copies of the standard Risking Connection Evaluation form to TSI following every training offered at their agency.

Please Note

• Participants designated by their organization/system to be RC Associate Trainers, who have met the above credentialing requirements, will earn a certificate that grants a limited license to teach RC in the organization and programs named in the certificate only.
• RC Associate Trainers are not permitted to provide RC training outside of the organization/system/program without approval from TSI.
• The organization/system/program is not permitted to open internal trainings to participants other than staff of the organization/system/program unless arranged through TSI.
• The license applies only to the individual who earns certification as long as he or she is employed by the named organization. If the RC Associate Trainer leaves the organization, another trainer must satisfactorily complete the RC TTT course before providing RC training for the organization.
