Restorative Approach and

Risking Connection for Foster Parents

NEWLY REVISED AND UPDATED!

Mix-and-Match Trainings So You Can Implement Both

TSI's signature trainings, the Restorative Approach (RA) and Risking Connection (RC) for Foster Parents, are now new and improved. Both are fully updated, with easy-to-use Teaching Manuals. TSI has been offering them to new client agencies; now we want to offer to you, our long-time client agencies, via a series of mix-and-match trainings.

We are offereing 3 separate trainings described below.

By attending the RA Basic training, your staff will learn the fundamentals of this trauma-informed method of working day-to-day in child group care settings. By attend the Train-the-Trainer trainings, your RC Trainers will be able teach these trainings to your staff in an ongoing way. RC Trainers can attend one, two, or all three. There are some prerequisites for the Train-the-Trainers outlined below.

Restorative Approach Basic Training

December 12, 2019 9:00-4:30; OPEN TO ALL

The Restorative Approach™, newly updated in 2019, is a trauma-informed alternative to traditional “point and level” systems for child congregate care settings.  Based on attachment theory and the principles of restorative justice, it answers the question, “Now that I understand how trauma affects children, what should I do on Monday?”

The Restorative Approach translates what we know about trauma, the brain, and how children heal into specific strategies for all treatment providers within the organization. When children display behaviors that hurt others and the community, rather than “doing time” or dropping levels, staff assigns learning and restorative tasks to help children learn skills and make amends.

This training will cover:

  • Theory Behind the RA including Principles of Restorative Justice
  • Healing Attachment
  • Building an RA-Informed Milieu
  • Using the Milieu to Rebuild Brains
  • Responding to Problem Behaviors: When Children Hurt Others
  • Common Questions about Restorative Tasks
  • Common Resistances to RA
  • Vicarious Trauma and RA

Restorative Approach Train-the-Trainer

December 13, 2019 9:00-12:00; OPEN ONLY TO CURRENT RC TRAINERS who have completed the full-day RA Basic Training (either here at Kllingberg or at their agency)

This training offers an intensive learning experience about how to teach the 1-Day RA training within your system, agency, or school.  During the course of training, prospective trainers are expected to practice teach to their peers and the Faculty Trainers in a supportive learning environment.  Particular focus is placed on helping participants learn how to exemplify, in their work as a trainer, the relational concept of RICH (Respect, Information, Connection and Hope) that is central to the RA approach.

RC Foster Care Train-the-Trainer

December 13, 2019 1-4:30; OPEN ONLY TO CURRENT RC TRAINERS

This training enables RC Trainers to teach the newly-designed RC for Foster Parents training at your agency or school. The RC for Foster Parents training has been reorganized into 8 separate 90-minute modules, that can stand alone or be taught as a series during a timeframe of your choosing. RC Trainers will get exposure to the new materials, experience the exercises, and practice teaching the content. This training focuses on the unique challenges of training foster parents.

Training Fees

Please note: Materials fees for these trainings are included in the costs above. Materials for RA TTT include the RA Teaching Manual and the book Trauma-Informed Treatment: The Restorative Approach by Pat Wilcox. Materials for the Foster Care TTT include the Foster Care Teaching Manual.
