Healing Racial Trauma
Training Description
Racial trauma is an inescapable by-product of persistent exposure to oppressive circumstances that emotionally, psychologically, and physically devastates one’s sense of self while simultaneously depleting one’s strategies for coping. It is a life altering and debilitating experience that affects countless numbers of people of color over multiple generations. Unfortunately, the failure to consider the interrelationship between racial oppression and trauma limits our ability to work effectively with People of Color. Even when work is trauma-informed, it rarely devotes adequate attention to racial oppression and the pervasive trauma associated with it.
This daylong training will provide a comprehensive overview of the anatomy of racial trauma and the debilitating hidden wounds associated with it. Strategies for treating the invisible wounds of racial trauma will be provided. Special attention will be devoted to an exploration of racially-based self of the provider issues that may impede and/or facilitate effective therapeutic work with racially traumatized clients. The training will also address wider organizational interventions that support the healing of racial trauma.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify the invisible wounds of racial trauma that often get entangled in work with clients of color;
- Use trauma-informed treatment strategies tailored to work with racially traumatized clients of color;
- Identify critical self of the provider issues that may impede and/or facilitate effective trauma-based work with oppressed populations, especially those suffering from racial trauma.
Presenter
Kenneth V. Hardy, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized clinician, author, and Trainer. He is a Professor at Drexel University and also the Director of the Eikenberg Institute for Relationships in New York City, where he maintains a private practice specializing in working with traumatized and oppressed populations. Dr. Hardy is the former Director of the Center for Children, Families, and Trauma at the Ackerman Institute in New York City, and formerly served on the faculty at Syracuse University where he held numerous positions including Director of Clinical Training and Research, as well as Chairperson of the Department of Child and Family Studies.
He has won considerable acclaim for the contributions that his publications and videotapes have made toward challenging our society to think critically about the hidden but significant connections that often exist between trauma and issues of oppression. In addition to his own writing, Dr. Hardy serves on the editorial boards of six publications including the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, the Journal of Family Psychotherapy, the Journal of Divorce, the Journal of Couples Therapy, the Psychotherapy Networker, and the Journal of Family Counseling.
Dr. Hardy, along with a colleague, developed the training manual and curriculum that has been used in New York City to train licensed clinicians in Trauma Based Family Therapy. This program was funded by the September 11th Fund of New York and was co-sponsored with the NYC Mental Health Association. Additionally, he has provided training and consultation to an extensive list of Human Services agencies devoted to providing Trauma-Based, culturally competent care to children, couples and families.
Training Cost

Cancellation Policy
Payment is expected at the time of registration. We will refund the registration fee, minus a $30 processing fee, for cancellations up to two weeks prior to the training. No refunds will be made for cancellations inside two weeks.
Continuing Education Credits
This event is eligible for 5.5 CE Credit Hours and is a certified diversity training.
Satisfactory Completion. Participants must have paid the continuing education fee, signed in, attended the entire seminar, completed an evaluation, and signed out in order to receive a certificate. Failure to sign in or out will result in forfeiture of credit for the entire course. No exceptions will be made. Partial credit is not available.
Psychologists. R. Cassidy Seminars is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. R. Cassidy Seminars maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
Social Workers. R. Cassidy Seminars, ACE Provider #1082 is an approved provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. R. Cassidy Seminars maintains responsibility for this program. Approval Period: April 15, 2015- April 15, 2018. Social workers should contact their regulartory board to determine course approval. Social workers will receive continuing education clinical social work clock hours for participating in this course.
CA The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred the CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licenses. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
NY R. Cassidy Seminars is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider (#0006) of continuing education for licensed social workers.
Counselors/ Marriage and Family Therapist.

Other States If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure. The Ohio Board includes Counselors.
