Training Description

After this consult group participants will actually be able to understand Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory and use it to improve their treatment of clients, both in therapy and in the everyday moments of programs. Polyvagal theory refers to the nerve structures which connect the brain to various parts of the body. It describes the ways our body is constantly scanning for safety, and how we react when we feel unsafe. It gives us new insights into the ways that problem behaviors are adaptive and in fact biologically hard wired, and how the most effective way to change these behaviors is by activating the social engagement system. Polyvagal theory includes a respect for the body (both our clients’ and our own) and an awareness of its wisdom. Instead of trying to force changes in behavior, we can teach our clients how to use the body’s wisdom to manage scary situations. This training will include specific strategies for using our growing knowledge of this biology to create more engaged and healing environments for our clients.

Presenter

Patricia D. Wilcox, LCSW, Vice President of Strategic Development, Klingberg Family Centers, New Britain, Connecticut specializes in treatment of traumatized children and their families. She created the Restorative Approach™ , a trauma- and relationship-based treatment method. She is a Faculty Trainer for Risking Connection® and an Adjunct Faculty at the University of CT School of Social Work and at St. Joseph’s University. She travels nationally to train treaters on trauma-informed care, specializing in improving the daily life of treatment programs. She was the 2011 Connecticut Social Worker of the Year. She is the author of Trauma Informed Care: The Restorative Approach published by NEARI Press as well as several articles.
