Main Street Alabama is pleased to bring Great American Main Street Award Winner, Renaissance Covington's Executive Director, Katie Meyer, to Monroeville. Katie will be showcasing one of their vibrant placemaking programs, CURB'D. CURB’D is a parklet program that aims to support local businesses by promoting walkability and connectivity while showcasing the region’s design talent through quasi-­temporary public installations.

Katie will share insights on the role of creative placemaking and temporary interventions in Main Street revitalization including some specific examples showcasing the opportunity, approach, and impact. Katie will highlight the Curb'd Parklet Initiative and how Renaissance Covington worked with local businesses, design professionals, and the community to build five parklets in their downtown. Additionally, Main Street Alabama organizations will work to identify their own tactical projects based on real opportunities within five downtowns. 

 

About Katie:
Katie Meyer is the Executive Director of Renaissance Covington, Inc. a non-profit whose mission is to socially and economically activate downtown Covington. Katie has been in this role since 2010 and in that time Renaissance Covington has built notoriety for creative placemaking projects like the Curb’d parklets and Madlot, Public Wi-Fi, pop-up shops and a variety of downtown events including the 36-week Covington Farmers Market. In 2017, Renaissance Covington was honored with the Great American Main Street Award by Main Street America. 
 
Katie is the co-author of “Walking Cincinnati: 32 tours exploring historic neighborhoods, stunning riverfront quarters, and hidden treasures in the Queen City,” which was published in 2015. She is currently working with co-author Danny Korman on a second edition to be released in 2018. 
 
Katie graduated from Covington Latin School in 2000. Before coming home to Covington, Katie earned a B.A. in Political Science and Journalism from the University of Kentucky. She earned her M.S. in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School in New York City. While living in New York City, Katie began her work in nonprofit for the Huairou Commission, a global network of grassroots women’s organizations.  Katie has also worked for the Kentucky League of Cities, Kentucky Housing Corporation, and as a small business owner. 

Katie serves on the board of the Covington Business Council, NKY Fairness, and Be Concerned. Katie also works as a downtown consultant with Thomas P. Miller and Associates and has worked on downtown strategic plans for Billings, Montana and Hot Springs, Arkansas. In 2016, Katie was awarded the Next Generation Leader Award, and in 2017, Katie was named the Emerging Leader in the Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky awards.
