Strategic Mediation for Educational Interpreters

How to intervene to mediate barriers to communicate is a key skill for all interpreters. Interpreters need straightforward strategies for intervening when environmental, linguistic and cultural issues threaten to derail the session.
Education interpreters often interpreting in environments that make mediation especially complicated. Special education and disciplinary sessions often involve multiple educators, administrators and specialists. You often interpret for the parents or family members of students who speak English. Interrupting to solve a communication problem is made more difficult in these settings. This session teaches a practical 5-step process for how to intervene to resolve a communication barrier.
Participants will practice the process with realistic scenarios taken from education settings.
Katharine Allen is a healthcare and community interpreter with over 3 decades of experience interpreting, training, and designing curricula. She is co-president of InterpretAmerica. She is lead developer and licensed trainer for The Indigenous Interpreter® 60-hour training and helped embed professional interpreting into medical missions in Mexico. She has also designed curricula for the military.She teaches for the Glendon College Masters in Conference Interpreting and The Professional Interpreter Online. Katharine is co-author of The Community Interpreter® International: An International Textbook, The Medical Interpreter-A Foundation Textbook for Medical Interpreting and Breaking Silence: Interpreting for Victim Services. Katharine speaks and trains nationally. She has an MA in Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Giovanna was born and raised in Naples, Italy. She graduated from the Istituto Orientale, Naples, Italy in Foreign Modern Languages and Literatures in 1992, and from the School of Translation and Interpretation, Geneva, Switzerland in 1997. She has worked in the United States as an Italian translator, interpreter, language tester and senior project manager in translation. In 2010 she founded Cesco Linguistic Services (CLS) in Colorado. In 2017 she co-founded The Professional Interpreter Online (TPIO), an online interpreter training organization. A co-author of The Community Interpreter®: An International Textbook and its workbook as well as The Medical Interpreter, Giovanna served on the Board of the Colorado Association of Professional Interpreters (CAPI) from 2009 through 2013, including three years as Co-Chair. She speaks at conferences across the U.S. and abroad and sits on the U.S. national delegation for ISO international standards for interpreting. Giovanna is the proud mother of two sons as well as three daughters from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
