The Office of Health Equity of the Wyoming Department of Health, in collaboration with One22, is pleased to bring The Community Interpreter to Jackson, Wyoming.

The Community Interpreter® International is the first and only national 40-hour certificate program for community interpreting in the U.S.

Candidates for this course include staff interpreters, bilingual staff with interpreting duties and contract interpreters in healthcare, workers’ compensation, education, social services and community services (hospitals and health departments, K-12 schools, family planning, domestic violence, housing, senior centers, law enforcement, etc.).

Community interpreting is a growing profession. It encompasses interpreting in health care, education, and human and social services. Federal civil rights legislation, national interpreting ethics and standards, hospital accreditation agencies and many state and municipal laws endorse or promote the use of qualified or certified interpreters.

A qualified interpreter should, at a minimum, attend professional training and be tested for language proficiency. A certified interpreter would also need to pass a recognized government or professional certification test.

This 40-hour course covers ethics and conduct, basic skills (from pre-session to post-session), positioning, terminology, modes of interpreting, steps for sight translation, intervention strategies, cultural mediation, and other vital skills and protocols. Professional skills are presented as simple components, including stream lined decision-making tools to help interpreters make on-the-spot judgment calls that are easily incorporated into daily practice.

The course is very interactive, relying on the use of role plays, activities and group exercises, and discussions based on video. The program includes the most comprehensive training manual in the field, written in plain English, and featuring an abundance of visual aids to make the content easy to understand and a pleasure to read.

The program concludes with a two-hour written assessment on the last day of training. It offers three levels of certificates for successful candidates: Qualified, Professionally Trained and Hospitality Interpreter.

All participants must complete a language proficiency assessment. They will receive a certificate attesting to the successful completion of the assessment. The proctored language proficiency assessment is scheduled with One22 and must be completed by October 2, 2017. The fee is $75 per language (primary & target), a total of $150, and is in addition to the registration fee.
