Sight Translation

Skill-building Training for Interpreters of All Languages

Sight translation, that is the oral rendition of a written document, can be a nightmare for community interpreters when they are confronted with so much paperwork at their appointments. But it is one of the modes of interpreting that we are tested on at the certification exam.

Community interpreters are often asked to sight translate a document such as a consent form, health related paperwork, application form, etc. How accurately we do it? What is the right approach to do it? Do we all know the steps of how to render an accurate sight translation? What if the document to sight translate is too dense, too complex, too legal? Are we qualified to sight translate every document?

We will learn the C.A.L.L. model to identify whether we are qualified to sigh translate the document at hand, the appropriate protocol to follow and how to improve our interpreting skills and techniques.

There will be plenty of time devoted to strategies and hands-on practice in small groups or individually, depending on your working language.

All participants will be required to bring a voice-recording device.
