ASME - Milwaukee Section Educational Program at WCTC (Earn 4 PDH Credits!)

Register Now!ONLINE REGISTRATION WILL REMAIN OPEN THROUGH MARCH 20, 2017!

The ASME Milwaukee Section will be holding an educational program on Saturday March 25, 2017 at the Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) in the RTA Education Center.  For more info on WCTC, please go to http://www.wctc.edu/

This is a half-day program put on by the ASME-MIlwaukee Section for the benefit of ASME Members and their guests as well as any Professional Engineer.  The day will begin with registration at 7:30 am, continue with four 50 minute long presentations and end around 1pm with lunch.  Attendees will have the opportunity to leave with a certificate for 4 continuing education PDH's for the four topics offered that can be used for their Professional Engineer license renewal.  If you are only able to attend one or two presentations, you can register for that and get PDH's for those presentations attended.  However, we strongly recommend that you register online on/before March 20, 2017.

Below is the Schedule for this event:

  • 7:30-8:25 AM Set-up, registration and breakfast (Fruits, bagels, pastries, muffins, orange juice & coffee)
  • 8:25-8:35 AM Welcome by the Section Chair Al Perkins, and seminar coordinator Subha Kumpaty
  • 8:35-9:30 AM Session 1 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances: The ABCs of GD&T by Bruce Weiss, Principal Engineer, Rockwell Automation
  • 9:35-10:30 AM Session 2 Energy Efficient Emission Control To Reduce The Impact On Global Warming by Dr. Maruthi Devarakonda, GE Power
  • 10:30-11:00 AM Break (Chips & dip)
  • 11:00-11:55 Session 3 Fundamentals and Applications of Neuroimaging Methods by Dr. Todd Parrish, Department of Radiology, Northwestern University
  • 12:00-12:55 Session 4 Global Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Studies on Ti-64 alloy surface modification by laser metal deposition by Dr. Subha Kumpaty, Elizabeth Paoli and Arianna Ziemer, MSOE
  • 1:00 PM Lunch (Box lunch including sandwich, chips, cookie & beverage)

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PRESENTATIONS

First Hour:  Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing:  The ABC’s of GD&T

Rockwell Automation low voltage (LV) drives recently released the Power Flex 755T 300-3000 HP regenerative drive family which leveraged GD&T mechanical design.  This is the first Rockwell LV drive family designed entirely with GD & T.   This discussion will explain why GD&T was used, explain the basics of GD&T and review how it was successfully implemented at Rockwell.    Future chapter education meetings will build upon this discussion and explore how to use GD&T for datum structure analysis and assembly tolerance stack-ups.    ASME GD&T professional certification opportunities will also be reviewed.

PRESENTER: Bruce Weiss is a Principal Engineer at Rockwell Automation where he has been employed since 1997 working in the low voltage drives business.    Bruce was the lead mechanical engineer on several drive development programs including the recently introduced PowerFlex 755T modular drive family encompassing 300-3000 HP power range at 400-690V.   Bruce earned his BSME from Marquette University and MSME from Purdue University.   He holds a WI PE license, is a recognized Rockwell DFSS black belt, holds over 20 issued US Patents and is an ASME Technologist GDTP Certificate Holder.

Second Hour: Energy Efficient Emission Control to reduce the impact on Global Warming

Emissions from power propulsion sources on ground, in air, in water, and from stationary power sources have a hazardous impact on human health if they are not completely controlled. This talk presents a high-level overview of various emission control devices and their functionality in reducing emissions and discusses ways to curb emissions that have a significant impact on our environment and cause global warming.

PRESENTER: Dr. Maruthi Devarakonda works for GE, a digital industrial company. Maruthi’s current focus is on developing analytics for asset optimization through digital twin technologies. Besides technical leadership, he has over 13 years of experience across industry, government and academia in project management, new technology evaluation and technology/product alignment. With deep domain expertise in the broader area of exhaust aftertreatment for mobile and stationary engines, specifically in applied catalysis, kinetic modeling, model based control and diagnostics, Maruthi holds 13 US patents (10+ pending) and has published 21 technical articles in international journals and conference proceedings

Third Hour: Fundamentals and Applications of Neuroimaging Methods

This presentation will introduce different modalities for acquiring neuroimaging data with a focus on MRI based methods. Despite the difficulties related to the high magnetic field environment it is possible to acquire data in different populations that can help inform us about disease progression, normal development, and treatment effects. A new method of neuroimaging allows neurosurgeons to map functional activity in awake patients in the operating room.

PRESENTER: Dr. Todd Parrish has a MS/BS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics from the University of Minnesota where he focused on the technical aspects of MR imaging including acquisition and reconstruction methods. While conducting his PhD, he was involved in some early developments of functional MRI. Currently, the Director of the Neuroimaging facility that houses 4 research dedicated magnets at Northwestern, Todd’s interests span a variety of projects investigating: the impact of cerebrovascular disease on brain activation studies, the physiologic basis of the blood oxygen level dependent signal using caffeine and other vaso-challenges, how physiologic noise affects resting state networks measured with BOLD, neuroplasticity changes induced by therapy in chronic stroke, simultaneous collection of perfusion and permeability information in brain tumors, and the early detection of Alzheimer’s through changes in the blood brain barrier.

Fourth Hour: Global Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Studies on Ti-64 alloy surface modification by laser metal deposition

This presentation will give an overview of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Milwaukee School of Engineering with an emphasis on its international component.  Dr. Kumpaty will give a brief overview followed by the two MSOE seniors Elizabeth Paoli and Arianna Ziemer sharing the international research they conducted in South Africa on the material characterization of surface modification of Ti64 alloy using laser deposition of varying percent of Ti64/Mo powder.

PRESENTERS: Dr. Kumpaty, a director on the board of ASME Milwaukee Section, is a professor of mechanical engineering at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.  He is the principal investigator of the MSOE’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program which has been funded by the National Science Foundation since 1996.  Currently in the senior year of BSME, Arianna Ziemer and Elizabeth Paoli participated in 2016 summer REU and conducted advanced materials research at the University of Johannesburg and the National Laser Center of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, South Africa.
