Experiences with 4K Television Production
by
Phil Squyres of Sony

Is 4K relevant to the TV Broadcast Engineer today?

Maybe not yet, but there are several reasons why it is relevant to those engaged in making the content further up the supply chain. It is likely some of those issues and features will find their way into the future of TV… whatever that happens to be.  HDR, wider color space, and high frame rate are all issues that come into the discussion of future options once we capture using today’s state-of-the-art 4K cameras and workflows.

At the June meeting of the Society of Television Engineers, Phil Squyres, SVP Technical Operations at Sony Pictures Television, will share some of his experiences of being an early pioneer of 4K production for television.

Starting in the fall of 2012, Phil and his team had to quickly adapt to supporting the production and post production of scripted episodic television in 4K.  Since then, they’ve learned not only how to deal with four times the files sizes, but also how capturing 4K can improve today’s HD programming.

Dinner will feature a Organic Field Greens with Bleu Cheese, candied Walnuts, and Raspberry Vinaigrette followed by a  choice of:

  • London Broil served with Rice Pilaf
  • Fresh Roasted Salmon with dill butter sauce served with Rice Pilaf
  • Pasta Primavera (penne pasta with roasted vegetable marinara)

All meals include warm rolls and butter, coffee, tea and/or iced tea and for dessert Cheesecake.
