ICCER Networking Event: Keeping Seniors Safe
Join us as we celebrate Seniors' Week! We will have presentations about Age Friendly Edmonton, the Edmonton Community Paramedic Program and Elder Abuse Awareness. Our speakers will share how they work towards improving the safety of seniors in our communities, including those in care, and how we can use this knowledge in everyday practice. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with our speakers, as well as collaborate with one another over small and large group discussion. See more about our speakers below!
This Networking Event is suitable for all levels of staff, as well as family members! We encourage you to share the event information with family members you think would be interested in attending the event. Family members from ICCER member organizations are considered ICCER members and can register for free!

9:10 - 10:00 AM - Towards an Age Friendly Edmonton presented by Sheila Hallett - When community comes together to support seniors, great things happen. Age Friendly Edmonton has spawned many collaborations that are contributing to healthy ageing. Hear about a few of these efforts and what's next for the initiative.
Sheila Hallett began working as the Executive Director of the Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council (ESCC) in 2006 after 7 years as director of a local senior centre. In her time with the Council, Sheila has worked to build strong partnerships with organizations that serve and support seniors. The ESCC encourages coordinated actions of its members to continue to build an Age Friendly Edmonton. The Council provides support and facilitation to collaborations such as Age Friendly Edmonton (partnering with the City of Edmonton) and the Pan-Edmonton Group Addressing the Social Isolation of Seniors.

11:10 - 12:00 PM - Elder Abuse: Breaking the Silence presented by Caroline Smigielski and Melissa Kondro
Caroline Smigielski is the Executive Director at the Stop Abuse in Families (SAIF) Society and a member of St. Albert Homeless and Affordable Housing Coalition. Caroline was a member of the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council for 3 years. She has lived most of her life in Edmonton and is a parent of 2 adults and a grandparent. She began her work with women and children experiencing family violence in 1994. She has worked in both Edmonton and St. Albert with families and since 2011 with seniors. For the past year, Caroline has been the Executive Director at SAIF Society. She is a witness every day to the impact of violence and abuse and the challenges people face in moving beyond it. Caroline believes that everyone deserves to live free from abuse and is proud to have worked with the provincial Council, and the work that is happening in Alberta to improve conditions for older adults experiencing abuse. Caroline keeps the vision of a society free from abuse in her view and knows that by working together the culture will change. We will see the day when violence and abuse are not part of our society.
Melissa Kondro is the Elder Abuse Response Coordinator at the SAIF Society. She holds a diploma in Human Services, and in Social Work, as well as a degree in Human Service Administration. Melissa lives with her husband, two daughters and a new puppy, and has worked many years in the Family Violence field as both a Crisis Intervention Worker and Outreach Worker. Melissa was the Executive Director at a Parent Link Centre for 8 years and is co-founder of Angel Whispers, a babyloss support program in memory of her oldest daughter that passed away shortly after birth. Melissa is new to the Elder Abuse field and is loving working with older adults.
