Part 2: Removing 'Expressive Behaviours' in Dementia Care - 10 Practice Recipes:

Participants will work through how to:                                                        

• Remove all negative labelling language within continuing care facilities 
• Spread the ground-breaking traffic lights system to understand behaviours
• Focus on feelings before describing a person's actions
• Open staff fears and feelings about 'behaviours' 
• Adopt the 'rescuing' approach
• Reframe 'behaviours' as a service indicator
• Assess for pain as one of the reasons for 'behaviours'
• Eliminate the presence of almost all anti-psychotic usage
• Become a good interpreter in searching for the meaning behind 'behaviours'
• Place the successful reduction of 'expressive' behaviours within the need for complete culture change

About David Sheard:

Dr.  Sheard has developed a reputation as a challenging and motivational speaker and a leading dementia care consultant across the UK, Ireland, USA, and Canada. After 15 years in health and social services in specialist dementia care posts, latterly as a General Manager-Old Age Psychiatry in an NHS Trust, Sheard founded Dementia Care Matters in 1995. His purpose is to demonstrate that dementia care is about emotional care, and that this is no different to what we all need in life. 

For over 10 years Sheard worked as an external training consultant to Alzheimer's Society and has an appointment as a Visiting Senior fellow in the School of Health and Social Care, University of Surrey, and also holds the honorary degree award of Doctor of the University (DUniv). In 2009, Sheard worked as a Dementia Care Consultant to the BBC for the program 'Can Gerry Robinson Fix Dementia Care Homes'.

David Sheard steers Dementia Care Matters as a whole, while also providing specialist consultancy in areas of dementia care that are newly developing or requiring strategic focus. Sheard combines passion and clarity with detailed management to help a variety of organizations operationalize new cultures of care. His main focus in speaking is to reflect the realities of dementia care and what it really takes to 'get it'.

Alongside an extensive schedule of national speaking engagements across the UK and Ireland, Sheard also authors dementia care learning resources. He can be commissioned to produce practice development tools and specializes in motivational speaking on how to achieve health and social care culture change.

His expertise includes:

• Working with commissioners to steer effective change in dementia care
• Advising board-level staff on the design of strategies in dementia care
• Providing comprehensive environmental audits of care settings
• Converging dementia design with an operational model of care
• Developing General Manager and nurse leadership teams
• Transferring the Mattering Model into Supported Housing and Home Support

 

Part 1: Creating Culture Change in Continuing Care - 10 Strategic Recipes will be held in Calgary, AB on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Rockyview General Hospital (Room 10331) from 9:00am to 3:30pm.
