TOPICS

  •  Section 199A - QBI Deduction (4 CE)

The most talked about section of the TCJA, this session will take a deep dive into the code section  and regulations issued in August of 2018.  Issues discussed include what income qualifies for the deduciton, limitations on specified services industries, phase-in of W2 and asset testing.   Guidance on treatment of real estate activities will be explained.  The difference in allowed deductions across different entity types will be explained.   This session will conclude with comprehensive examples as well as entity selection under TCJA.

  • TCJA Update (2 CE)
This session looks at the substantial changes to the tax code brought on for 2018 by the Tax Cut and Jobs Act, with respect to individuals and businesses. Discussion will include regulations and other guidance issued through September 30, 2018
  •  Foul-ups, Bleeps and Blunders with  Self-directed IRAs (2 CE)

The internet and program promoters can lead unwary taxpayers down a perilous path.  While a self-directed IRA is legal and can often make sense in a taxpayer’s overall tax and financial plan, it is too easy to make a misstep through a prohibited transaction, which makes the entire IRA taxable, in some cases years before detection (See Peek v. Commissioner for an extreme case).
