John Laurence Busch Presents:
Introducing New Technology:
Can Steamboats Replace Sailboats?
Bravo's Restaurant - Robinson Twp.
Wednesday April 18, 2018
6:00 to 8:30 pm
Over the past few centuries, many new inventions have arisen to displace older technologies. Newer inventions face many hurdles - they must demonstrate they work better than older established technologies, are more reliable, safer and can be made available at a lower cost. Some examples:
Microwaves vs Conventional Ovens
Diesel vs. Steam Locomotives
Cell Phones vs Land Lines
GPS Maps vs. Paper Maps
Jet vs Propeller Aircraft
Uber vs. Taxis
Self-Driving Cars
John Laurence Busch has studied the introduction of ocean-going steamships and how they eventually were able to replace wind-powered clipper ships. This study provides interesting guidence as engineers work to introduce new process and product technologies into the world.
John will discuss his recent book, Steam Coffin, which describes the issues Captain Moses Rogers and the Steamship Savannah faced during their initial voyages in the 18th century. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during the event.
