Our final meeting of the 2016-17 year will be a tour of the Valspar Paint Plant in Rochester, PA on May 24th. Their plant manager Deb Wiley will be our host for the 1 hour tour.
Valspar is the largest metal packaging coatings solutions provider in the world, manufacturing a diverse line of coatings and inks for all segments of the rigid packaging market (cans, closures, and steel containers) as well as the flexible packaging market (paper, paperboard, film, and foil) and is the recognized industry leader.
The Rochester plant was founded in 1915 as Impervious Metal Corp. The site has been in continuous operation since. Stoner Mudge, Inc. took the reins in 1944, developing the first beverage can coating for steel beer cans before building the original Resin plant ten years later.
In 1956, Stoner Mudge, including the Rochester facility, was acquired by American (Martin) Marietta Co. and epoxy resin manufacturing capability was added to the resin plant. In 1963, the Packaging Coatings facilities of Martin Marietta were acquired by Mobil Oil, renamed Mobil Chemical in 1966. In 1984, Valspar purchased the Packaging Coatings business.
Valspar continues to drive innovation by meeting the growing demand for non-BPA products and providing can makers and brand owners with robust polyester, epoxy and acrylic choices.
The Rochester facility remains the most versatile of the Packaging Coatings facilities with the capability to make any of the products made throughout the division.
