AIChE Pittsburgh's Annual Student Night

Banquet, Student Awards, Great Speaker

Each spring the Pittsburgh Chapter of AIChE honors the students from our 5 local chem engr schools (Pitt, CMU, WVU, Geneva, and YSU).  This year the event will be held in the ballroom of the William Pitt Student Union at the Univ of Pittsburgh campus in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.  We will be recognizing an outstanding student from each school with a plaque along with a small monetary award.  All chem engr students from our 5 local schools are invited to attend at a special reduced price of only $10 (if you register and prepay by February 26th).

We are very pleased to annunce  that our guest speaker for the evening will be Morgan O'Brein, CEO of Peoples Gas.  Morgan has been following the development of the Marcellus and Utica shale gas wells and related infrasturcture over the past 10 years.  He is certain that the availability of abundant and inexpensive gas and liquids will soon trigger an industrial boom in the Pittsburgh region that will rival the size and scope of the steel industry in the 20th century.

Morgan is quite concerned the region's "brain drain" -  where recent college graduates often feel they must leave this area to secure a "good job".  He is confident the re-industialization of the Pittsburgh region will provide lots of great jobs not only for factory workers but for technical and management folks to design, build and operate all these new facilities

As in past years, we will be holding a poster session where students can highlight their research projects.  Easels will be provided for about students.  If you are intersted, please contact Paul Brezovec at Brezovec@ctc.com for details.

The Student Union caterers are preparing a delicious buffet dinner for us consisting of

  • Market House Salad with Ranch, or Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing
  • Lemon Parmesan Chicken with White Wine Sauce
  • Cod Florentine with Cheese and Spinich Topping
  • Oven Herbed Roasted Potatoes
  • Fresh Roasted Vegetable Medley
  • Rolls & Butter
  • Vanilla or Chocolate Cake
  • Coffee, Tea, or Soft Drinks

Following dinner we will have a short awards ceremory followed by Morgan's remarks and a Q&A session.

In addition to on-street parking, there is inexpensive parking in the parking garage under Soldiers & Sailors Hall, across 5th Avenue from the Student Union.
