Sexuality & Safety for Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities - What Caregivers Need to Know

This workshop is part of a half day conference called: Best Practices in Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities. The second session is called: Planning for the Future is Vital: What Familes and Professionals Need to Know about Transitioning into Adult Life.

About Session 1: Sexuality and Safety for Developmental Disabilities Presented by Bobbie Gallagher, M.A., BCBA
Adolescence can be a difficult time for children and families, and can be especially difficult for children with developmental disabilities and their families. This presentation will provide an overview of the specific challenges present during puberty and adolescence, specifically issues of safety and sexuality. Strategies for increasing independence while remaining safe will be addressed, and the skills needed to protect children from being both victims of sexual abuse and offenders in the criminal justice system. In addition, issues and strategies surrounding healthy sexual expression, modesty, privacy, and boundaries will be discussed.

About Session 2: Planning for the Future is Vital: What Families and Professionals Need to Know About Transitioning into Adult Life Presented by Cheryl Crick

The transition from high school to adult life is a critical stage for all students, however for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) this stage requires extra planning and goal setting. This presentation will walk families and professionals through the New Jersey system of state services for students with I/DD, and give an overview of other important benefits such as SSI and Medicaid.

This workshop is free of charge and eligible for four professional development hours. Presented by the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey, Advisory Council.
