When most people think about women struggling with eating disorders, women with physical disabilities are rarely considered. Despite the fact that studies and clinical observations have suggested that women with physical disabilities are actually at increased risk for developing an eating disorder. This lack of awareness has had significant implications in that there has been limited research and clinical information on how to best prevent and treat these issues. This webinar will discuss the role of physical disability in the development, maintenance, and treatment of disordered eating in women. Join Dr. Jennifer Mills and Kaley Roosen as they identify the severity of disordered eating within the population of women with physical disabilities, and discuss possible differences in how eating disorders manifest in this population. The talk will conclude with specific suggestions for preventing and treating eating issues for women with physical disabilities based on a clinical case study of a woman with Cerebral Palsy and Anorexia Nervosa.

Dr. Jennifer Mills is an Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at York University and a Registered Psychologist in private practice in Toronto. She has 15 years of experience treating women with eating disorders. She will use her clinical experience treating a woman with a physical disability and an eating disorder as the basis for the webinar. Her research centers around body image and eating disorders.

Kaley Roosen is a senior doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at York University working with Dr. Mills. Her dissertation, which she will be discussing in the webinar, examines the experiences of eating and weight management issues in women with physical disabilities. Kaley uses her personal experience as a woman with a physical disability and as a disability advocate to help inform her research and clinical practice.
