Employment of advanced practice providers (APPs) –such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants – is expected to grow by more than 30 percent by 2022 as clinics, hospitals and post-acute care facilities search for ways to reduce costs, address physician shortages and provide greater access to care. While this expansion of care teams solves some problems, it creates others such as communication vulnerabilities, confusion about scope of practice and potential gaps in oversight. We’ll explore how we can increase the effectiveness of APPs while minimizing risks.
