Itinerary

  • 9/8:  PM Whitman Mission (class & tour), Fort Walla Walla (guided tour), evening potluck & program
  • 9/9 AM Travel to Pendleton, OR @ Tamastslikt Cultural Institute (class), PM to Baker City @ Oregon Trail Interpretative Ctr (ranger-led activity + museum investigation), to Sumpter for evening cookout
  • 9/10 AM Sumpter Valley Dredge (local mining history tour & activity), Sumpter Valley Railroad (optional ride w/train robbery re-enactment), PM -- debrief, return home or do other suggested trip stops & activities

The Oregon Trail Revisited

Start your homeschool year off right with hands-on history and great scenery to enrich your learning program.  This Outdoor School to Eastern Washington and Oregon will provide students and their families with terrific guided activities on  the history of the westward movement and the rugged terrain of the picturesque and remarkable Pacific Northwest.    

Historical field studies in:

  • Early Pacific NW explorers & missionaries
  • Native American history & culture
  • The Westward Movement
  • The pioneer's daily life  
  • Regional mining history w/gold panning
  • From Oregon Country to statehood
  • Steam locomotive ride with train robbery

A great experience for all ages!

Program Fee

  • $79 per family if registered by 8/8, $99 after 8/8
  • individual student attending with another  family $49  (to 8/8) or $59 (after 8/8)

Program fee covers curriculum, facilities use fees, and expenses and honorarium for instructors and entrance fee for all sites waived as a school group except as specified. Fees not included in program fee:  lodging, travel, food, and Fort Walla Walla $6.50/adult (students free), and the optional ride on steam locomotive w/train robbery ($15/adult, $11/student, free/under 5 yr old w/adult).

Curriculum Study

Once registered, you will receive the pre-trip information and curriculum (by mid July or shortly after registering). Also included will be links to specific websites for any  pre-trip study resources.  

High school study objectives will be provided for US/Pacific NW History.  Academy NW students can also check with their teacher to see how learning activities can apply to any subjects being studied.  

 Other Details

 Families make their own lodging arrangements  (see left panel recommendations) and can bring  simple foods for breakfasts, sack lunches,  snacks, and drinks/water to have in their car.    Dinners will be planned potlucks for Thursday &  Friday even.  Food assignments for the dinners  will be sent  out two weeks prior.  

 Students 12/+ years old whose parents are unable to attend but who come with a "designated adult" with another registered family providing transportation and supervision for the whole time.  Non-attending parents submit a permission slip and arrange with hosting family the student's costs for travel, food, lodging, etc.
