Funds raised by the Making Democracy Work Dinner support the Oveta Culp Hobby Fund for Voter Education, established to honor Oveta Culp Hobby, the Texas League's 7th president. The fund supports our nonpartisan Voters Guides in English & Spanish, our VOTE411 interactive website, and our state wide Get Out The Vote campaign. Susan Carroll is an award-winning investigative reporter at the Houston Chronicle. Carroll specializes in stories about vulnerable people, government failures and the environment.
Prior to joining the investigative team, Carroll covered immigration for more than a decade. She has written extensively about border security, immigration law, assimilation, and the path to citizenship.
Her investigation into the sexual abuse of unaccompanied children in federal custody in 2014 prompted a change in federal policy. Carroll previously covered the U.S. - Mexico border for the Arizona Republic and the Tucson Citizen, twice earning the highest honor for print journalists in Arizona. She was named Print Journalist of the Year in 2012 by the Houston Press Club. She has won several awards for her use of the Freedom of Information Act. Currently, she’s working on a project on regulation of toxic polluters. Carroll graduated from the University of Arizona in 1999 with degrees in Journalism and Spanish.
Ernie Manouse is a seven time Emmy wining TV anchor, producer and host, who currently has three series running on Houston Public Media: InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse (currently in its 13 season - syndicated nationally to over 100 PBS stations), the arts magazine show Arts InSight (which shares content across 31 other PBS stations nationwide), and the top rated Downton Abbey inspired talk show, the nationally syndicated Manor of Speaking (which just wrapped its third season).
Ernie began his career in radio, and has for the last 18 years worked primarily in television. Recently, with the re-launch of Channel 8 as part of Houston Public Media, you can now hear and see him on Radio, TV and the internet. Additionally, Manouse tours the country interviewing Al Pacino in the stage show Pacino: One Night Only, is co-host to finance expert Suze Orman's on her bi-annual PBS specials, and holds the title of “Ultimate Interviewer” from the Houston Chronicle.
