Plenary Sessions
Understanding the Unique Appalachian Culture in Which We Minister – led by the Rev. Paul Rader, Associate Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Knoxville; former Director of the Coalition for Appalachian Ministries
Everyone has heard of (or been guilty of using) Appalachian stereotypes, both positive and negative. Are we Appalachians shiftless and lazy or are we proudly independent? Do we butcher the King's English or do we employ remnants of Elizabethan-era language? Which is it? Why is it? How does it affect us? Paul Rader will guide us through a discussion of Appalachian cultural values and how they sometimes work out in congregational life.
nFOG: Out of the Fog – led by Mr. Alan Payne, Ruling Elder and Vice Moderator of the Presbytery of East Tennessee and the Rev. James McTyre, Pastor of Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, Knoxville; Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of East Tennessee
The new Form of Government (nFOG) of the PCUSA presents many changes in the guidance for local churches and councils. How does it affect your church? How does it impact our presbytery? Alan Payne and James McTyre, who have over 100 years combined experience being Presbyterian, will guide you through some of the changes, bringing comfort and challenge as we forge ahead in our modified polity.
Spiritual Leadership – led by the Rev. Wendy Neff, Pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church
Many of us know that leading a church is not the same as running a business, yet often that is what sessions end up doing. Using Joan Gray’s book Spiritual Leadership for Church Officers, we will imagine a new way to equip leaders in the church so they may share the gifts they have been given and encourage others to do the same. Consequentially, this kind of leadership allows all of us to answer the call God has placed on our lives to be servants in the church and the world.
Break Out Sessions
Praying the Scriptures – led by the Rev. Jon Faraone, Pastor of Center Presbyterian Church, Tellico Plains
Kenneth Boa once shared, “Scripture was revealed not merely to inform us, but to transform us.” Praying the scriptures is a way to do just that. Come and discover a very simple, yet life changing way to explore the richness of God’s word.
Resources for Ongoing Session Retreats & Renewal - facilitated by the Rev. Craig Hendrix, Interim Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Oak Ridge
This workshop is designed to help leaders address some of the needs of their congregations, such as leadership development, planning for the future, and looking at church renewal opportunities. Although primarily for pastors, laypersons are invited to participate if interested. The workshop will be an open, round-table discussion so participants can share resources and models they have used and value for ongoing session retreats, renewal and education.
Clerks of Session Training – led by the Rev. James McTyre, Pastor of Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, Knoxville; Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of East Tennessee
What is a Clerk of Session really responsible to do? Explore how this role of ministry can clarify your church's mission and strengthen its work. It is more than taking minutes and keeping up with rolls. Being a Clerk is a calling by God to service and leadership for the church of Jesus Christ.
