Creating Healthy Congregations: Caring for, responding to and managing life together as the Body of Christ – led by the Rev. Miki Vanderbilt and the Rev. Wendy Neff

The Rev. Wendy Neff is pastor of Highland Presbyterian Church in Maryville and the Rev. Dr. Augusta B. “Miki” Vanderbilt is pastor of West Emory Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. Both leaders are trained facilitators in the Healthy Congregations Workshop Program.

Utilizing the work of Peter Steinke, this workshop will explore how your congregation can adopt new and healthy ways of dealing with stress and anxiety, the role of spiritually and emotionally healthy leaders in influencing your church’s emotional system, factors that could put your congregation at risk, and more.

Youth Ministry Together – led by the Rev. Bradley Palmer, the Rev. Jonathan Warren and the Rev. David Webster

The Reverends Bradley Palmer, Jonathan Warren and David Webster, respectively pastor New Hope PC, Knoxville, Powell PC and Concord PC. These are smaller membership churches which have joined with a few other PCUSA churches to form a Youth Ministry Consortium for shared mission and ministry opportunities.

A struggle that many small churches face is leading activities and events for their youth, especially with only a few members in a youth group.  Three pastors of a newly formed consortium of small churches in the Knoxville area will lead a panel discussion of how you can do "youth ministry together." These pastors will help you network and connect with other Presbyterian Churches in your area so that you can plan larger youth group events throughout the year. They will share how small youth groups can have fun and do meaningful mission work together as a larger group.

Making Disciples, Making Leaders – led by the Rev. Judd Shaw (offered also at 11 am)

The Rev. Judd Shaw, General Presbyter of the Presbytery of East Tennessee, served as pastor of our Farragut Church for 25 years and then was the Executive for New Harmony Presbytery before moving here.

It has been said that a church is only as strong as its leadership. If that is true, then we need to spend more time and effort in strengthening leadership in our churches. This workshop will examine the role of Elder and other leaders in the congregation and explore ways of growing one’s faith in response to Christ’s call to discipleship.

Making Disciples, Making Leaders – led by the Rev. Judd Shaw

see description above

Toto, I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore! - led by the Rev. Chuck Traylor

Currently Pastor of the Fairfield Glade Community Church near Crossville, TN, Chuck has served small churches, been the organizing pastor of two Presbyterian new church developments, and also served as Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of the Northern Plains.

Dorothy’s words to her dog in “The Wizard of Oz” are prophetic for small churches in the 21st century.  The world in which small congregations lived and moved and had their being for so many years has radically changed. How do small congregations, with limited resources in terms of people and pennies, adapt to the changing reality in which they find themselves? This workshop will attempt to focus on the strengths that small congregations offer that larger churches cannot, while focusing on the three essentials of any church’s ministry – worship, mission, and pastoral care.

Christian Education Exchange – led by Melanie Rasnake

Melanie is the Director of Children's Ministries at New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville

Christian Education is happening in our churches today, using different resources and styles of teaching that best fit their unique setting.  Yet, teachers and CE committees are often looking for new ideas, curricula, and ways of instructing.  What better resource do we have than each other!  Pastors and volunteers in Christian Education, come to this Exchange bringing some ideas of what has worked in your setting, names of curricula, websites you use  and walk away with recommendations that you could explore for your church.
