The Childbirth & Doula Education Training introduces participants to the art of supporting women through labor and childbirth. The Labor Companion or Doula is part of the ‘birth team’ but is not a medically trained person. This is not a medical program. It is not assumed that the participants have any prior knowledge of pregnancy, labor or birth. The only prerequisite is to have a desire to learn how to effectively assist women through one of their most life-impacting experiences, birth! If students come to class with prior knowledge and experience, they will have the opportunity to refresh and expand their knowledge in relation to working as a labor companion.
This is a complete program to prepare students to practice as a qualified labor companion or doula, upon completion. The learning sessions and methods are both academic and interactive, giving students the opportunity for hands-on role play to solidify labor support concepts they are learning. There are assignments designed to help students retain and synthesize the materials presented. This program is graded on a pass/fail basis. It is a non-credit course, although, upon completion students receive a Certificate of Completion for 16 contact hours from LifeReach International. This program is appropriate for those who desire to assist their friends during labor and birth. It is also recommended for those entering childbirth education fields, midwifery, nursing, and massage therapy and pre-med students. It can be very strategic for those who have medical skills because they can experience birth in a different capacity (without clinical responsibilities), thereby developing even more compassion and understanding of woman’s ability to have positive birth experiences without intervention.
