Content: Based on the presenter book, A Handbook to Assess and Treat Resistance in Chemical
Dependency, this workshop deals with the diverse and often inaccurate assumptions of denial and resistance. These are not simple problems and they require far from simple interventions. Resistance
and denial can originate from a number of sources that include clients, counselors, groups, treatment
programs, and the field itself. A number of ideas will be examined to help the participant more accurately determine true resistance from other types of behavior. Particular attention will be given to the “Denial Decision Tree”, and how that assessment tool can produce a more accurate representation of client behavior. The participant will walk away from the workshop with new ideas about the nature of addiction resistance and better methods to engage it.
Facilitator: Mike Taleff, Ph.D., CSAC; Dr. Taleff, is a nationally known educator and trainer in substance
abuse and mental health services. He is an author and contributor to clinical magazines and research.
Target Audience: Certified Substance Abuse Counselors (CSAC), and applicants; those with other ADAD professional credentials; and anyone involved in the human services field.
