Moving Us Forward: At the Intersection of Community Engagement and Collective Impact
October 15th – 16th, 2015 * Newark, NJ
About the Conference
As a vital agent of social change, higher education is integral to creating vibrant, healthy communities in our town, cities, regions, and our nation. This conference will highlight emerging theory and practice in place-based collective impact initiatives. It provides a forum to showcase the strategic engagement of faculty, students, and the wider higher education community by emphasizing engaged scholarship, cross-sector partnerships, and student research.
The goals of this conference are:
- Demonstrate both innovation and broader impact as outcomes of community engagement.
- Highlight best practices in place-based, issue-driven faculty/student engaged scholarship.
- Advance our understanding of the intersection between community engagement and collective impact
- Offer a strong array of pre-conference workshops that advance community engaged practice in higher education.
Framing Questions:
- What innovative ideas are advancing higher education's community engagement practices?
- In what ways can the collective impact framework inform community engagement strategies and programs in higher education?
- How are place-based consortia involving faculty and students in ways that produce shared benefit?
- How are campuses assessing the effectiveness of such community-engaged scholarship, service- and/or community-based learning courses, partnerships, and community service activities?

The Conference Planning Committee Seeks Proposals for Workshop and Poster Sessions
Your proposal should consist of a session title, a brief abstract, and a longer session description accompanied by presenter names, titles, and institutional/organization affiliations. The proposal should be clear and concise and your session title should accurately reflect the session content.
Reviewers will look favorably upon proposals that:
1. Explicitly address the goals and framing questions of the conference;
2. Reflect sound theory or research and their potential contributions to student learning and community outcomes and success;
3. Include findings from evaluation and assessment and ways to use the information to improve teaching and learning; and
4. Describe active learning goals and what participants should expect from the session.
Presentation Categories:
- Workshop 90 minutes each
- Poster Session 60 minutes each

Workshop Information
A successful workshop proposal will: frame the topic, provide an overview of goals, describe the topic (model, strategy, practical examples that enhance participants' learning), and discuss how you will guide participants through exercises or activities (including small groups) that will help them advance efforts on campus. In order to make the conference as dynamic as possible, we may ask presenters to collaborate on workshops.
Poster Session Category Information
Poster session will have multiple facilitators simultaneously presenting a poster board display (specific size to be provided upon acceptance of your proposal). Electrical outlet and other supports can be provided upon request. Poster sessions combine visual displays of information with written materials and small group interaction to create an interactive learning experience. Text, diagrams, pictures, and/or graphs that depict program components, findings, samples of student work, community testimony and evidence.
Selection Process: All proposals will be peer reviewed
