Summer Practice Retreat

An Exploration of Emotions
with Tergar Instructor Myoshin Kelley

Hudson Valley, NY

July 25 - 28 2014

Meditation helps us to discover a deep sense of well-being that is not dependent on the circumstances of our lives. When we learn to tame our minds and open our hearts through the practice of meditation, we discover the compassionate wisdom and radiant joy that is our true nature. In the process of taming our minds, we often find that strong emotions are where we feel thrown about by life. During this program there will be an emphasis on how these same emotions can be used as a means of discovering our own inner wealth.

This residential retreat will offer a unique opportunity to deepen our practice of Joy of Living or Path of Liberation meditation teachings of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. The retreat will be facilitated by senior Tergar instructor, Myoshin Kelley.

Over four days, we will explore how emotions can be brought to the path through different forms of practice with awareness, compassion and wisdom – experiencing firsthand how these practices can transform the mind and open the heart. The retreat will take place in a secluded environment and with the support of a community of meditators. The daily schedule will include six to eight hours of meditation per day (practiced
in twenty- to thirty-minute sessions), periods of silence along with video teachings by Mingyur Rinpoche, group discussions including a group for Path of Liberation students, and presentations on the key points of meditation by Myoshin.

This course is open to both beginner and experienced meditators. It offers the beginner meditator an opportunity to explore in depth the practices taught by Mingyur Rinpoche, and for the experienced meditators the chance to deepen their practice and understanding.

The retreat will be held at Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center, a peaceful oasis just 2 ½ hours north of New York City. The retreat center is nestled amidst the Berkshire and Taconic Mountains and covers 130 acres of lush forests, open fields, vibrant wild flowers, and an abundant vegetable garden nourished by the crystal clear Taconic Stream. It’s an idyllic setting for quiet contemplation. Meals will be vegetarian.

In this short video teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses the practice of retreat and its importance on the spiritual path: The Importance of Retreat.

QUALIFICATIONS: This retreat is open to anyone. It will be extremely enriching for anyone interested in meditation, whether you’re a new or experienced practitioner.

PRECEPTS & SILENCE: While attending this retreat all participants are expected to abide by the ethical precepts for lay practitioners. This includes the abstinence from sexual activity. We will maintain periods of silence throughout this retreat, the length of which will vary so that there will be less silence in the beginning and end of the retreat, and a period of complete silence in the middle.

FOOD: Three vegetarian meals will be served each day. Pumpkin Hollow is not able to cater to special dietary needs. If you have special dietary needs, you are encouraged to bring what will sustain you. There is no reduction in fees if you choose to bring your own food, but Pumkin Hollow does provide a guest refrigerator in the dining room for these purposes.  Also, many of the cabins and dorms have kitchens and refrigerators--please let us know when you register that you require access to a kitchen.

TRANSPORTATION: Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center is located 125 miles north of New York City (2-1/2 hours by car), an hour south of Albany, 15 minutes from the Mass. border, and 150 miles west of Boston (3 hours by car). We recommend not relying solely on GPS - (some guests have had difficulties with losing service or not being able to follow the back road directions!). Address: 1184 County Route 11 , Craryville, NY 12521. Also, please do not use Google Maps as directions are incorrect. For directions using MapQuest,  click here, and for directions from the Pumpkin Hollow website, click here.

Train: The closest Metro-North line station is Wassaic, NY.  For those traveling from NYC on Friday, July 25th, there is a direct train leaving Grand Central at 3:43 p.m. that arrives in Wassaic at 5:54.  If we can get a group to arrive on that train, we can arrange transportation more easily.  The closest Amtrak line station is in Hudson, NY and is more expensive. There is taxi service from the Hudson Amtrak station, or you can coordinate a ride through the Tergar ride-share page.

Shared Rides: We have set up a Ride and Travel group in the Tergar Learning Community (TLC). Once you register as a TLC member (membership is free), you can make a posting to request a ride, offer a ride, share accommodation information, etc.

Airport: The closest airport served by major airlines is Albany International Airport, located about one hour away.  The options for getting to Pumpkin Hollow from the airport include renting or hiring a car from the airport, or coordinating a ride with someone through the Tergar RideShare.  For information about renting a car from the airport, visit www.albanyairport.com/car_rentals.php

Please note: Tergar is not involved in organizing rides/ travel for participants. The TLC page relies on participants to contact each other directly. We would appreciate it if locals would take the time to check the RideShare and Travel page to see if rides might be needed. Please indicate on your reservation if you are able to take passengers (especially from N.Y.C.). Thank you!

Cancellations: Cancellation deadline is June 25th, 2014. Cancellations before this date will be charged a $50 administrative fee.  Cancellations on or after June 25th, 2014 cannot be refunded.
