Join us on Friday, October 4th for The Early Childhood Advantage, 2019 Symposium on School Readiness organized by Great Start for Great Futures. This event brings together over 700 early childhood providers, community members, and various public/private entities.   The Early Childhood Advantage: A Symposium on School Readiness is Stark County’s annual symposium to discuss closing the achievement and opportunity gap for the youngest members of our county. 

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Rosemarie Allen

Implicit Bias:  From Awareness to Positive Change

Dr. Rosemarie Allen has served as a leader in early childhood education for nearly 40 years. Her life's work is centered on ensuring children have access to high quality early childhood programs that are developmentally and culturally appropriate. She is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her classes are focused on ensuring teachers are aware of how issues of equity, privilege, and power impact teaching practices. Rosemarie was appointed as a "Global Leader" for Early Childhood and works with professionals from more than 80 countries, sharing inspiration and information on issues impacting children and families worldwide. She is also a respected keynote speaker, presenting on Implicit Bias, Culturally Responsive Practices, Cultural Competence, Micro-Aggressions, Racial Disproportionality, Privilege, Power, and Intersectionality, etc. Rosemarie earned her B. A. from California State University, Masters of Education from Lesley University and Doctorate in Leadership for Educational Equity at the University of Colorado, Denver.

The Seeds of Happy Healthy Living:  Songs for Emerging Character Strengths 

David Kisor is a multi-award winning songwriter, performer, playwright,  teacher, and trainer who pens and produces songs that translate key findings from recent child development research into practical and entertaining products for children, teachers, and parents. Mr. Kisor tours all over the United States and internationally. He has trained over 70,000 teachers on how to use music in the classroom and has presented hundreds of concert events for children and their families. His songs, published by GROWING SOUND, are geared primarily for children ages 0-10 and focus on topics such as creativity, hope, optimism, resilience, parent engagement and more.

Trauma in Early Learning:  Understanding & Monitoring Impact

Melissa McClain is a graduate of Kent State University and is the Community Education Program Coordinator at Akron Children's Hospital. She is responsible for a social and emotional learning curriculum that includes k-12 classroom education as well as psychological trauma education for educators and other professionals who work in a school environment. Since 2006, Melissa has educated over 70,000 students, school staff and community members. She has worked with over 150 Ohio school buildings and community organizations that work with youth and has also been lucky to travel to speak for state and national audiences on teen dating, emotional literacy, bullying, and psychological trauma.
