Integrating Genomics and Epidemiology: Examples of Antibiotic Resistant Gonorrhea and the Resurgence of Mumps

with

Yonatan Grad, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases                                           Department of Immunology and Infectious Disease                            Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, MA

Thursday, March 29, 2018

 Hosted by:
The Northeast Branch, American Society for Microbiology and the Northeast Section of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry

Evening Program:

The Grad laboratory studies how pathogens evolve and spread through populations with the motivation of improving clinical and public health strategies for decreasing the burden of disease. We aim to use a variety of methods, including genomics, epidemiological tools, mathematical modeling, and microbiology to define the dynamics of spread and characterize the genotypic and phenotypic diversity of the pathogens.

Dr. Grad earned his MD and PhD at Harvard Medical School with doctoral research in bioinformatics and genomics and trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and infectious diseases at MGH/BWH. He is an advisor of the CDC’s Advanced Molecular Detection initiative and collaborates with local, national, and international public health institutions on pathogen genomics and infectious disease dynamics. In this talk, Dr. Grad will discuss his work on controlling the spread of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea and on the factors contributing to the resurgence of mumps in vaccinated populations.

Dinner:

Chef’s Choice Buffet Dinner will be served.
