Nurturing Attachment and Building Executive Function
Course Description: Inhibiting impulses, using working memory, generalizing information from one situation to another, categorizing, putting things into perspective, sustaining attention when it takes an effort, motivation, noticing our impact on others—these all are executive functioning attributes. But children and teens who have stressful early lives, with many ACES, show up in disproportionate numbers as having executive dysfunction.
This practical all-day workshop looks at ways that all teachers, social workers, and psychologists can help develop better executive functioning and stress regulation in children. We will look at methods of stimulating the development of executive functioning, ways to accommodate children who have it, and family and school environments that are best in developing regulation.
We will also discuss the preventative role that secure attachments can play in helping children’s brains, and ways to protect and enhance the security of attachments—especially in vulnerable families.
