Iowans for Animal Welfare Conference

People from all over Iowa involved in animal protection will be gathering at the  6th annual Iowa Federation of Humane Societies (IFHS) Iowans for Animal Welfare conference on October 17 and 18 in Des Moines. Please join us!

The conference begins the afternoon of Friday, October 17 with a workshop on safe and humane animal capture and trasport featuring Misha Goodman from Iowa City Animal Care and Control. Following the workshop, join us for a networking social to meet friends and make new connections, followed by our keynote speaker Theresa Strader, founder of National Mill Dog Rescue, of Colorado Springs, CO.  National Mill Dog Rescue rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes discarded breeding dogs and educates the general public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry.

The conference continues Saturday with a series of presentations of interest to a range of people involved in animal welfare work. The morning begins with a general session that will facilitate the exchange of issues and solutions with others from saross the state.

Saturday features two tracks of presentations on a range of topics designed to have something of interest for everyone.  The presentations start with a session on how to start a running club affiliated with your shelter or rescue.  Richard Koontz from the Iowa Non-Profit Resource Center will speak about the legal responsibilities of non-profit boards.

After lunch (optional box lunches are available for $12 or on your own), Saturday continues with presentations on topics as diverse as holositic care tips for senior pets, photographing adoptable pets, and horse slaughter and responsible horse ownership.

A downloadable version of the conference agenda is available here.
