Topic 1:  Taxation of Capital Gains Inside Trusts

Historically, having a trust's capital gains taxed to the beneficiaries has been a challenge.  With the recent increase to the long-term capital gain rate (i.e., the addition of a top bracket of 20%) and the advent of the 3.8% surtax, there will be a renewed focus on that challenge.  This presentation explores several ways this can be achieved.

Speaker:  John Goldsbury is the Managing Director and Wealth Strategist for U.S. Trust.  John provides financial and tax planning expertise to clients of U.S. Trust.  He is one of approximately 50 Wealth Strategists nationwide providing expertise, and he supports the North Carolina markets. He is also one of five members of the National Wealth Strategies Group, established to provide expertise on a national level to U.S. Trust.  Prior to joining NationsBank in 1996, John was a tax attorney in private practice in Portland, Maine for eleven years, ending as a partner at Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry.  He specialized in tax planning and litigation, including income tax, estate tax and gift tax, retirement planning, succession planning for closely-held businesses and option planning for executives.  He was co-chair of the Taxation Section of the Maine Bar Association.

This has been approved for one hour Life/Prometric, CPE, and CFP and CLE.

**To be followed by an additional free hour of CE from

9:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m.:
