Introduction to International Education Compliance and Regulation

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

This workshop is ideal for: Front counter and student support staff from all sectors, staff new to international education, and experienced professionals wanting an update on the key international compliance requirements.

Education providers enrolling holders of Australian Student Visas have significant compliance obligations. This workshop will provide participants with a general overview of the key legislative and regulatory requirements affecting education providers.

The content is introductory with a focus on the roles of different regulators, the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (2000) and in particular the 11 Standards of the ESOS National Code 2018.  

 

PRESENTERS:

Simon Davies Burrows, Manager, Internationalisation, Edith Cowan University  

Simon Davies Burrows is the manager of ECU’s Internationalisation team. With over 20 years’ education experience, Simon has held leadership roles in a number of areas at the university including international admissions, compliance and quality assurance, student mobility, international relations and academic partnerships. He regularly contributes to industry discussions and delivers workshops and presentations to colleagues across sectors.

He is a Senior Fellow of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA); a Fellow of the Association of Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) and Council for International Students of Western Australia (CISWA) Vice President.

 

Dr Fleur van den Heuvel, Manager International Compliance, Murdoch University

Fleur has worked in the education sector in Australia for over 10 years. She has experiences in the area of (international) admissions, marketing, student support and compliance at various higher education providers in Perth, such as Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Navitas (Curtin College) and Murdoch University.

Since November 2019, she is the Manager International Compliance at Murdoch University. Here she looks after the development, management and monitoring of ongoing processes and procedures to ensure that the University complies with the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act, CRICOS registration requirements and other relevant State and Commonwealth legislation. She developed an International Compliance Framework aligning compliance monitoring mechanisms at both operational and systemic levels. Fleur plays also a role in the promotion, support and education of University staff on their roles and responsibilities within the International compliance realm.

Fleur holds a Bachelor in Business Administration (Marketing), a Master in Communication and a PhD in Media Studies for which she received the Magdalena Prize in Feminist Research.
