Fall 2022 - Integrative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workshop

There is no question today that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an important tool in a clinician's toolbox. Significant empirical research has demonstrated its effectiveness with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, phobias, panic disorder, OCD, ADHD, social phobia, and other issues. At IAP, we view CBT as a general theory influenced by Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy (CT), Behavioral Theory, and Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). This general theory provides a structure for a number of interventions culled from a variety of theoretical sources to improve treatment effectiveness. These sources include Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure with Response Prevention, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and others.

This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as those experienced with CBT.  We will discuss the theoretical basis of CBT, its history, and how to integrate multiple other approaches into CBT to increase effectiveness.  Creative ways of working with client's cognitions and techniques for behavioral interventions will be taught and practiced.  We will then discuss the CBT approaches to specific diagnoses such as ADHD, GAD, phobias, depression, OCD, PTSD, and Panic Disorder.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy.  He treats clients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which he trained in during his graduate training as well as taking trainings at the Albert Ellis Institute, Beck Institute, and Edna Foa's Center for Treatment and Study of Anxiety.  Dr. Sutton is also versed in a number of evidence based, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treatments for ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Panic Attacks, Depression, OCD, and PTSD.  Although his work is from a CBT frame, he also incorporates techniques from his training in Schema Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitivation Reprocessing, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Structural-Strategic Family Therapy.
