Michigan Radio's State of Opportunity is kicking off National Volunteer Week (April 12-18) with a special "Day of Opportunity" on Saturday, April 11. On this day, we're encouraging our listeners to spend some of their time with us performing community service in their area.
In the Detroit area, we've partnered with Keep Growing Detroit. Keep Growing Detroit exists to promote a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables Detroiters consume are grown by residents within the city limits. Keep Growing Detroit's strategic approach includes work that fosters relationships to food, grows the knowledge of food and farming, builds leadership skills and capacity within Detroit's agriculture community, and changes the value of food while developing community assets.
Volunteers with Keep Growing Detroit will assist with growing transplants for the 1,400 urban gardens and farms we serve as well as planting and tending crops at the Plum Street Market Garden. Volunteers will work in the garden doing transplant production and preparing for the upcoming cold crop distribution as well as work outdoors with our farm staff to plant and weed our teaching and production beds.
All registered volunteers will receive a Michigan Radio "Day of Opportunity" t-shirt.
