The Biology of the Causes, Prevention and Management of Stress and Inflammation - Two of the Most Dangerous Threats to Health and Wellness

This 90 minute presentation will consist of a scientific lecture on the different causes of stress and inflammation; their detrimental effects on different physiological structures and functions; and the latest research showing how integrative therapies and interventions can prevent and reverse these problems.  The lecture will be followed by a hands-on session on some of the most effective ways for relief of physical and mental stress and treatment of local and systemic inflammation, including mind-body practices and self administered acupressure techniques.

Presenter:  Dr. Shin Lin is on the faculty of the Department of Developmental and Cell Biology and the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine.  With training in Western biomedical sciences and a background in Chinese mind-body practices and medical therapies, his laboratory uses hi-tech approaches to study the biological mechanisms underlying the benefits of Tai Chi/Qigong and acupuncture-related therapies.  He served on the National Advisory Council for Complemetary Medicine and Integrative Health and is on the editorial boards of Chinese Medicine and Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
