The Importance of Friendship:  Facilitating Friendships in the Inclusive Classroom

This workshop will provide families and educators with best practice strategies for teaching social skills in an inclusive classroom setting.  Resources include how to work with the general education teacher to set up and plan social skills weekly lessons, teaching peers about Autism and other disabilities, successful instructional delivery of lessons, and assessment of social skill instruction.

Mary Stone, M.Ed., ECSE
Is a special education consultant, college lecturer and early childhood special education teacher.  She is a parent of a child with Non Verbal Learning Disability and has worked to create social skills programming for her son and other students with disabilities in inclusive classroom settings.  Mary has presented trainings to parent groups, MPS teachers, First Stage - Next Steps theatre teaching artists, child care providers, college students, and community partners.  Topics include social skills instruction, differentiating curriculum, co-teaching strategies, understanding and addressing behavior issues in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities, effective teaching strategies in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, parent advocacy and parenting a child with special needs.  Her professional interests include inclusive schooling, teacher training, and social skills programming and implementation.
