Summer Program for Asperger Teens

Are you worried about your teen spending the summer in his/her bedroom with only video game characters for companionship?  We can help! The Autism Society is offering a six week recreational program for teens ages 13-17 with Asperger Syndrome, facilitated by Justin Hamilton, special education teacher at Lakeland School.

Each week we will gather in a different location to learn new skills and have fun outdoors! We will meet for 6 consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30.  The first meeting will be at the Autism Society office in Wauwatosa, where we will get to know each other and plan out the activities for the coming weeks. Occasionally the day of the week may be changed if necessary for a certain activity that is chosen by the group, assuming that this new day and time works well for all in the group.
Some possible activities we will try include:  sailing in Lake Michigan, hiking at Lapham
Park, planning a cook out and cooking a meal, attending a sporting event, or other
events suggested by participants.

Each week will have a friendship or team-building objective as well as a “homework” assignment to practice skills we are working on while having fun.

Course size limited to 10.  This course is targeted at individuals who are willing to try new things, do not need support for self-care, want to participate, and are comfortable in a group of up to 10 peers.

  • Objectives:
  • meet new people
  • have fun and enjoy outdoor summer activities
  • try new things
  • practice following directions, asking questions, working with others
  • make friends
Parents are responsible for transportation to the various activities the group may choose.  With your permission, we will let the participants share contact information to arrange car pooling or future get-togethers.
Cost: $200/member or $250/nonmember for the 6 week course.  Depending on activities chosen, additional
activity fees may be incurred, but we will try to make most events free or low-cost.  Not sure if your membership is current?  Contact Sue LeBuhn. Be sure to include your full name and address in the email.
