Supporting Families living with Autism: a Mental Health Providers Conference

Autism Affects the Whole Family 
 Learn more about how to support families living with autism and how to help them cope with challenges they may encounter.  
PRESENTERS:
Diane Mosnik, PhD, will be speaking on preparing teens with autism and their families for adulthood.  Dr. Mosnik is a clinical neuropsychologist who treats both pediatric and adult clients in the metropolitan Milwaukee area.
Glenis Benson, PhD, will speak about how communication deficits affect behavior.   Dr. Benson is an educational psychologist in private practice in Madison, Wisconsin, who works with families and schools to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

  • Mental health providers and family therapists who are interested in topics that often present as difficulties in people with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families, and want ideas about working with those problems.

Conference Objectives
Morning: Preparing teens and their families for adulthood
  • To develop an understanding of the important role of clinical neuropsychology in making an accurate diagnosis, and understanding diagnostic criteria in the new DSM-5.
  • To identify how cognitive, emotional, and social capabilities and limitations affect an individual's ability to face common obstacles encountered during adolescence and young adulthood.
  • To identify strategies for families and healthcare providers to assist individuals diagnosed with ASDs in overcoming common obstacles encountered during young adulthood. 
  • To understand how to continue to provide support and guidance while helping them to become as independent as possible.

Afternoon:  How Communication Deficits affect behavior

  • Identify the primary means by which persons with autism acquire language;
  • identify the function of a targeted challenging behavior;
  • identify at least two roles of echolalia;
  • identify expressive communication deficits;
  • learn at least 2 accommodations for receptive communication deficits;
  • learn non-verbal strategies to promote de-escalation;
  • learn strategies for teaching replacement behaviors.
 Optional CEU Requirements - CEUs may be obtained thru PESI, Inc. for many professionals.  To view a description click "HERE". 

Tuition: $75 Course fee (non-member), $50 Course fee (Autism Society member), optional 6 hours of CEUs $15.

Presenters

Dr. Glenis Benson obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she minored in Communication Disorders. Glenis has supported persons with ASDs for 35 years. She consults to school districts, agencies and families. She is a founding board member of Camp AweSum, a non-profit organization that operates both youth and familiy camps for persons with ASDs. Glenis' private practice is based in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dr. Diane Mosnik is a Clinical Neuropsychologist trained in the assessment and diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric disorders. She received her PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School. She currently works for the ProHealth Care Neuropsychology Section at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
