McKenzie Method - Part A: The Lumbar Spine

Course Overview

McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is an evidence based system of assessment, classification, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. Its comprehensive framework allows a clinician to screen, categorize, apply tailored treatment and a preventative program for each patient. This 26.0-hour course presents the theoretical aspects and concepts of MDT, as applied in the examination and treatment of patients with complaints of low back and related referred pain. 

The first 5.0 hours of the course is completed as an online Distance Learning Component*. The remaining 21.0 hours are with an Instructor at a teaching venue. 

Through lectures and patient demonstrations the derangement, dysfunction and postural syndromes are described in detail and appropriate treatment plans are outlined with emphasis on the use of patient self-treatment procedures.

The clinical efficacy and limitations of the McKenzie approach as applied to the lumbar spine are illustrated by patient demonstrations.

Course Goals

Following attentive participation in, and completion of, this course will provide participants with the introductory knowledge, basic skills and abilities to begin to:

1. Appropriately apply the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy to patients with lumbar spine problems.
2. Distinguish between the McKenzie syndromes (derangement, dysfunction, postural) and other spinal conditions and provide appropriate management regimens for each of the McKenzie syndromes.
3. Identify when the application of external forces is required for the resolution of symptoms using McKenzie’s concept of progression of forces.
4. Assist patients to design and apply the therapeutic processes to achieve management goals.

*Online Component
The 5.0 hour online component will be assigned a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the classroom session and must be completed prior to attending the classroom component. Upon registration you will be emailed the information necessary to complete the online hours. Therefore, it is suggested that you register as early as possible prior to each Part. 

Prerequisites 
Part A must be completed prior to Part B
Part A must be completed prior to Part C (completion of Part B is not a requirement to complete Part C as long as Part A is complete)
Parts A, B & C must be completed prior to Part D 

Note: Parts A-D must be completed to sit for the credentialing exam in Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy (MDT).

Attire
Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing conducive for exercise for the practical portions of the course.

**Continuing Education (CE) credit
CE credit is typically applied for in the state/province of the program & other select states/provinces. Please inquire with PCC at (563) 884-5998 if this course is approved for CE credit in your state or province (if outside of WI).  Always register a minimum of 2 weeks before your state's or province's CE application deadline (if it is not the state/province of the course) and email Jonathan.Soltys@McKenzieInstitute.org of your request. If you do not notify us of your CE request with enough lead time before the CE application deadline, there is no guarantee we can obtain CE credit in your state/province for the course. An additional fee may apply depending on the amount of your state's or province's CE application fee.

COVID-19 Precautions & Processes
(based on current data and is subject to change):

1. Course registrants are advised to stay home if they are sick or have recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 or are positive for COVID-19.
2. A self-screening health questionnaire will be administered to each attendee upon arrival to the course each day.
3. Temperature screenings will be administered to each attendee upon arrival to the course each day (if above 100.4 F / 38 C, entry will be denied). 
4. Upon passing the heath and temperature screening, a colored wrist band may be provided and must be worn for the entirety of the day.
5. Masks will be required to be worn by attendees. Attendees are expected to provide their own masks.
6. During the practical portions of the course, only surgical type masks or N95 masks will be permitted to be used due to the close contact (no cloth masks).
7. We are encouraging all attendees to practice regular hand washing. 
8. Social distancing will be enforced beginning with Day 1 registration. Attendees will need to line up in 6 foot increments away from the registration tables.
9. Registration will open earlier than normal each day to allow enough time to process the class and ensure on-time starts.
10. Attendees must sit in the same seat in the classroom for the entirety of the course and work at the same treatment table with the same partner for the practical segments.

Additional Information
Every attempt is made to offer this program as publicized. However, The McKenzie Institute International (MII) reserves the right to adjust course dates, location, times, instructor, tuition, etc. in order to accommodate for unexpected occurrences and to cancel due to insufficient enrollment. We will only notify advanced registrants of any cancellation or course changes. MII is not responsible for any expense incurred by registrants due to adjustments or cancellations (we recommend that you do not purchase non-refundable airline tickets, hotel rooms and/or rental cars associated with MII courses). A $50 processing fee will be charged per Part for any tuition refund request when the registrant provides written notice of cancellation at least fifteen (15) days prior to the Part's start date. Tuition is non-refundable or transferable within fourteen (14) days of the Part's start date.
