MPI Masters Series: 
'World of Hurt' - Pain Mechanism Classification System

Overview:
This introductory lecture will cover information critical to the assessment and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal pain.  This lecture introduces the concepts to classify and address pain as it relates to the peripheral and central nervous systems.  The Pain Mechanism Classification System will be discussed with goals of teaching the attendees how to classify and sub-classify each mechanism of pain and an introduction to its integration into clinical practice.  This lecture will also cover subgrouping methods that address musculoskeletal pain throughout the continuum from acute, subacute and chronic stages covering chemical, structural, mechanical, cognitive, emotional, psychological and cortical mechanisms.  Patient rated outcome measures, psychometric tools and intervention strategies will be outlined.

Objectives
By the end of the program, the attendee will be able to understand (at an introductory level):

  1. The basis of a Pain Mechanism Classification System 
  2. Nociceptive Inflammatory: Mechanical and Chemical Pain
  3. Nociceptive Ischemic Pain
  4. Peripheral Neurogenic Pain 
  5. Central Sensitivity Pain 
  6. Affective Pain: Conscious vs Unconscious 
  7. Autonomic/Motor Pain and the classification of Peripheral Mediated Pain 
  8. Outcome measures and baselines
  9. How to incorporate the appropriate treatment strategies for each subgroup
