SEI-Illinois February Dinner Meeting

Steel Girder Erection Analysis for the O’Hare Airport Transit System Extension

Presented by: Stan Kaderbek, P.E., S.E. & Stephen Long, P.E., S.E.

Abstract:

The Airport Transit System (ATS) is a quick and convenient way to get around O’Hare International Airport. Under the O’Hare Modernization Program, a 2000 foot extension of the ATS including a new station was required to reach the new joint-use consolidated rental car and parking facility. The ATS extension consists of an inbound and outbound track each having a unique alignment creating multiple different curved girders with unique lengths and radii and even in some cases, curved girder segments with multiple different radii on the same girder. Due to the uniqueness of the girders, most girders required their own analysis and pick plan for the erection of steel. The presentation will touch on the analysis used for the erection plan and the erection solutions that were utilized for the curved girder sections.

Speakers’ Bio:

Stan Kaderbek is a State of Illinois Licensed Structural Engineer and Licensed Professional Engineer in too many states to mention. He currently serves as Milhouse’s Vice President of Civil and Transportation overseeing a group of over 80 engineers and technicians who are far brighter than he. Stan’s checkered past includes working for consultants, a contractor and public agencies including the City of Chicago and Chicago Transit Authority. If he had spare time, he would learn Old English so that he could finally understand Beowulf. But since he doesn’t have spare time, he doesn’t understand Old English and is now forgetting New English.

Stephen Long is State of Illinois Licensed Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer with 6 years of structural engineering experience within bridges, heavy industrial, and building retrofitting.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Bradley University and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.  Mr. Long joined Milhouse Engineering & Construction, Inc. in 2015.
