Engineers Week Banquet

You are cordially invited to celebrate Engineers Week 2014 at the E-Week banquet on

Friday, February 21, 2014!

Please invite all that may be interested in attending this event.

Former Vermont Governor James H. Douglas will present on:

“Vermont: Where are we Heading?”

Vermont is a clean, safe, healthy state where anyone should want to live and work.  Yet our population is aging, the workforce is shrinking and our tax burden continues to rise.  What does the future hold?  Can engineers make a contribution?  The former governor will offer his thoughts on our prospects for recovery and prosperity.

The Reception will be held at the South Burlington Doubletree Inn.  The cocktail hour will commence at 5:30 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm.  Awards and the presentation will follow.  Congressional and state government officials have also been invited to attend.

The cost is $38 per person ($20 for students).  If you wish to only attend the presentation without dinner, the cost is $10.  Also, in the past we have asked the professional societies if they or their members would like to sponsor a student to attend the banquet.  We have found that many students have an interest in attending, but not the budget for it.  This would be a great opportunity for the students to mingle with the engineering community especially if your company is looking to hire.

Please RSVP by February 15th at:

Speaker Biography:

Former Vermont governor James H. Douglas was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1951 and graduated from East Longmeadow High School.  In 1972, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College, where he majored in Russian Studies.

In November 1972, Mr. Douglas was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives, and he became the House Majority Leader during his third two-year term at the age of 25. He left the Vermont General Assembly in 1979, afterwards serving as a top aide to Governor Richard A. Snelling. Mr. Douglas was elected Vermont Secretary of State in November 1980, a post which he held until 1992.  In November 1994, he was elected Vermont State Treasurer, after receiving the endorsement of both major parties.

In 2002, he was elected the eightieth Governor of Vermont and was subsequently reelected three times with a majority of the vote.  In early 2010, Mr. Douglas became the first American political leader to receive the National Order of Quebec from the government of Quebec and Premier Jean Charest at a ceremony at the Quebec National Assembly. He was recognized for strengthening Vermont's historical bonds with Quebec and making improved relations with the province a priority of his governorship.   He also served as Chairman of the National Governors Association from 2009 to 2010.  During his tenure as Vermont’s governor, Mr. Douglas promoted Vermont’s EB-5 program under the auspices of the state government, a unique arrangement among all EB-5 programs and one which has contributed to making Vermont’s program the most successful in the nation.

Since leaving office in 2011, he has been an executive in residence at Middlebury College, where he teaches a course titled Vermont Government and Politics..
